Magnificent birds, yet badly behaved . . . as judged by the fillers and watchers of bird feeders. When they come, other birds go. When they come, bird seeds go faster. Much faster. Right now I'm looking out my window at the smaller goldfinches and cardinals feeding. Sometimes the goldfinches arrive in such numbers they seem to mob the feeders. And go through a ton of seed. And yet I don't mind. Maybe the grackles just need an extreme make-over. Those black feathers have got to go! Too unfriendly. Maybe if they were white and paisley blue we'd welcome them. And a bit more shy. Okay, so an extreme make-over and polishing school. That would do it. Or maybe I should just adjust my attitude. Am I a birding bigot? Same here in Florida.
